Community Service/Historic Preservation at the Veterans Cemetery & Blue Star Memorial Marker in Igo.
The 4th Wednesday of the month members go to the Veterans’ Cemetery (in Igo) to weed and plant, depending on the request of the cemetery manager. Additionally, members could work on the Blue Star Memorial Marker if needed.
Conservation, Arbor Day & Penny Pines
RWGC purchases trees and participates in the annual tree planting celebration at one of the Redding City Elementary Schools on either California Arbor Day (March 7) or National Arbor Day (April 27). RWGC also collects donations at each meeting to benefit reforestation. Money goes to the Shasta Trinity National Forest. Each $68.00 buys seedlings for 10 acres. Individual contributions can be made in memory of special individuals.
RWGC competes in the thematic design garden event at the annual Shasta County District Fair in June. The committee will create, build, and care for the living plants at the fair for a week. It is a great opportunity to demonstrate our creative teamwork and gain positive publicity for the club.
Flower Show/Floral Design
Many of our club members are involved in “Cascade Arrangers” (Floral Design Club) which meets on the first Tuesday of the month (9:30 am) at Anderson Neighborhood Church, 4684 Rhonda Lane. Before each program at our monthly meetings, members are invited to bring in floral designs or horticulture they are proud of or want to identify. RWGC offers floral design workshops, and encourages all our members to bring in horticulture from their gardens and/or floral designs for our annual Flower Show in the spring
Members meet at least three times per year (e.g. Christmas, Valentine’s Day, St. Patrick’s Day, Easter, Mother’s Day) to assemble creative bouquets for the Veterans’ Home and retirement homes in Redding. No floral arrangement experience is necessary... we learn together!
Whether you are a master gardener or a novice, RWGC offers the opportunity to learn how to propagate and care for plants through our knowledgeable members and guest presenters. This committee presents horticulture workshops and focuses on organizing fundraising plant sales, as well as nourishing our Green Thumb Table (plants donated to RWGC for the benefit of members at monthly meetings).
RWGC has been sponsoring scholarships for Shasta College horticulture students for years. This committee meets in April to review the scholarship applications and choose two students who will each receive $1500.00. It is then our policy for a couple of members to attend the Shasta Awards ceremony in May to cheer on our recipients.
Spring Luncheon and Plant Sale
This is RWGC’s annual major fundraising event. All members are involved in securing donors/donations for the raffle and silent auction, raising plants for the sale, making salads for the luncheon, selling tickets, handling publicity, making decorations and centerpieces, and tirelessly helping the day of the event.
